Obituary for The Honorable George H. Ferguson

The Honorable George Herbert Ferguson, 84, of Elyria passed away on Sunday December 21, 2014 following complications of heart disease surrounded by his loving family. He was born December 2, 1930 in Lorain, and graduated from Lorain St. Mary's High School in 1949. Judge Ferguson graduated from the University of Notre Dame with a BA degree in Economics in 1953, and The Ohio State University with an LLB in 1956 and was awarded a Juris Doctorate degree. He started his service in the Army, later he transferred to the Air Force and became Staff Judge Advocate at Yokota Air Base in Japan, and retired as Lieutenant Colonel from the United States Air Force Reserves. He was a Trust Examiner with the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland. Judge Ferguson had maintained a private law practice prior to serving as the Elyria City Solicitor and Prosecutor, and was the Law Director to many area townships and cities. He was the longest serving Judge of Elyria Municipal Court from 1985 to 2003 and continued as a Visiting Judge in the Cleveland Housing Court until 2014. Judge Ferguson is the only Elyria Municipal Court Judicial Candidate of his time to have received the highest designation of "Highly Qualified" from the Lorain County Bar Association. As Judge, he was known for his vast knowledge and respect for the law, compassion to those who came before him, and was held in the greatest esteem by his peers and friends. Judge Ferguson was admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of Ohio and the Supreme Court of The United States. Judge Ferguson was a member of The Lorain County Bar Association, Lorain County Club of Notre Dame, The Ohio State Bar Association, Notary Public Committee, Men's Senior Fellowship, Ohio Township Association, Knights of Columbus, St. Mary's Church in Elyria, and the Breakfast Club at Donna's in Elyria and Chris' in Lorain. Judge Ferguson was devoted to his family and proud Notre Dame alumni. Survivors include his wife Maurita Ferguson (nee: Merrill) whom he married June 6, 1957, two daughters Catherine Hochevar (Robert) of Fairlawn, Colleen Davis (Timothy) of Avon Lake; two sons Thomas G. Ferguson of New York City, Robert Ferguson of Elyria. Additional survivors include six grandchildren, Steven, Sarah and Kyle Hochevar, Grant, Evan and Parker Davis; a sister Elizabeth Bond of Dallas, Texas, a brother Thomas J. Ferguson of Wakeman. Judge Ferguson was preceded in death by his parents Frederick G. and Beatrice C. (nee: Kissell) Ferguson, and a sister Jane Renz. Family will receive friends 12 Noon to 4:00 PM Sunday December 28, 2014 at The Laubenthal Mercado Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 38475 Chestnut Ridge Rd. (at State Rt. 57) Elyria (440)322-4626 where closing prayers will be recited at 10:30 AM Monday. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 AM Monday December 29, 2014 at St. Mary's Church, 320 Middle Ave, Elyria. Rev. Fr. Charles T. Diedrick, Pastor will be the Celebrant.
