He was born March 20th, 1927, in Johnson County Kentucky but lived most of his life in Lorain, Ohio and most recently in Elyria, Ohio. Leroy (Joel) retired from United States Steel/National Tube in Lorain, Ohio and also proudly served during World War II in the United States Army. Known for his devout Christian testimony and compassionate, giving heart, Leroy attended Pentecostal Foursquare Churches in Amherst, Lorain and Elyria throughout his life. Over the past two years, he found great joy and solace under the ministry of Pastor Scott Skeens at the Sheffield Church of God in Sheffield, Ohio. He was also renowned throughout Lorain County as an avid outdoorsman and Cleveland sports fans. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with long-time friends Bob Tolliver, Nolan Smith, Whitey Newman, the Messer brothers, Dick Hecock and his favorite hunting & fishing companion, his devoted grandson, Ryan Salyer. In addition to his faith, Joel Leroy dedicated his life to the woman he adored and was married to for over 64 years, Dorothy Jennette (Fyffe) Salyer, who survives him. Leroy was also very proud of his two surviving sons, Ronald (Camille) Salyer and Kevin (Tina) Salyer. His sons reside in Seguin, Texas and LaGrange, Ohio, respectively. Salyer of Johnson County, Kentucky along with his three brothers, Eugel (Ruth) Salyer of Lorain, Ohio, Eugene (Eileen) Salyer of Ashland, Kentucky and Harry Russell (Garnett) Salyer of Paintsville, Kentucky. In the final year of his life, Joel Leroy deeply appreciated the compassion and care shown to his wife Dorothy by the outstanding staff at Porter Pavilion at Avon Oaks under the direction of Mindi Husk. He also thrived on the daily kindnesses, friendship and camaraderie extended to him by "Big Ed" Juristy and Viola Strong along with the Porter Pavilion nurses and caregivers and the owner and service team at Nick's Family Restaurant in Elyria, Ohio, where he dined daily.
