Obituary for Helen M. Brown-Farrar

Helen M. Brown Farrar (nee Soules) passed away at the age of 94 on December 1, 2018 surrounded by family at O`Neill Healthcare in North Ridgeville. She lived a long, productive life filled with purpose and love. Family meant the world to Helen. As the youngest daughter of Frank and Anna Soules, she was a devoted sister to her seven older siblings. Being the last living member of her family, she kept the memories of those now gone alive for the rest of the family through her many stories and recollections of past events. Genealogy services were no match for her keen memory. She always felt fortunate to have two great loves in her life; first married for 38 years to Henry Ford Brown (deceased), and then married to John E. Farrar for 32 years. Helen was the proud and loving mother to six children with Ford; Sandee Murphy (Patrick), Gary (deceased), Gail Murphy (Jerry, deceased), Brian (Joan), Robin (Brenda), and Bruce (Barbara). She was a devoted grandmother to 12, great-grandmother to 10, and great-great-grandmother to 10 more. Her family also included numerous nieces and nephews all over the country. Her extended family with John included the Farrar children; Lisa, Mark, and Joe, plus two grandchildren. Helen graduated from Elyria High School in the class of 1942, forming lifelong friendships. She continued meeting with girl friends and classmates for lunch through 2017. Her work history began during WWII at Lear Romec. While raising her six kids she was a sales representative for Avon and Minnesota Woolens while also working at area grocery stores A&P, Acme Meats, and Fisher Fazio’s. Many in the area will remember her smiling face and friendliness while working in the Elyria City Schools cafeterias for many years until her retirement. After a childhood of frequent moves, Helen liked putting down deep roots as an adult. She lived in Elyria since 1936 and in the same house she and Ford built in 1950. Yet, she also loved RV traveling with John anywhere the road took them - as long as it meant returning home to see her kids. They roamed throughout the USA visiting relatives, joining many fellow frequent travelers and making new friends. She experienced great joy reveling in others’ reactions to her age since she never quite looked “that old” to others. A woman of strong faith, Helen was an active member of Washington Avenue Christian Church since 1938. She served on many committees, taught Sunday School, served in the diaconate and was an active member of the Joanna Circle and Church Women United Fellowship. Please join the family for a celebration of Helen’s life on Saturday, December 15 at 11:00 a.m. at Washington Avenue Christian Church. Services will be conducted by Rev. Nathan Russell. A social gathering and luncheon to greet family and share stories will immediately follow the service. A private burial will take place at Brookdale Cemetery. In lieu of flowers or plants, the family suggests memorial contributions be made in Helen’s name to Washington Avenue Christian Church, 301 Washington Avenue, Elyria, Ohio 44035. Arrangements were entrusted to The Laubenthal-Mercado Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Elyria, 440-322-4626. Online condolences may be expressed at
