Obituary for Eugene E. Heard II

ITH PHOTO , FLAG & MASONIC EMBLEM Bill to the funeral home Eugene E. Heard II 97 of Eaton Twp., N. Ridgeville passed away July 1, 2015 peacefully at his home having laid aside his tools of life and gone to live with his Savior Jesus Christ. Eugene "Gene" was born in Pittsburgh, Pa. January 2 , 1918 to Eugene Heard I and May Tracy Heard (nee Sumner). Gene's father Eugene I passed away when he was an infant during the 1918 flu epidemic. His mother first relocated to Kent, OH, then settled in Elyria,OH teaching school in a one room schoolhouse. Gene was very proud to be a graduate of Elyria High School class of 1937B the "First Chartered School West of the Alleghany Mts. And enjoyed attending annual reunions. During WWII Gene served with the U.S. Maritime Merchant Marines (Commissioned by an act of Congress in 1775 making it the oldest and first branch of the U.S. Military Service), as an ordinary seaman and deployed into harms way delivering the needed munitions and supply's to fight the war aboard countless Libertyy Ships to places like Panama, Africa, Algiers and Saipan. He later attended Officer Cadet School and received his commission and attained the rank of Ltjg. While attending the Brooklyn School of Optics in 1949 , in Brooklyn , N.Y., Gene met the love of his life Doris Lillian Kolb at a YMCA church service , and later married Sept. 7, 1949 at Detchler United Methodist in Detchler,OH. They started the first optical eye glass store in Elyria called "Heard Optical". Later Gene went to work for the GM Tank Plant in Brookpark,OH in the Safety Department. He established the first Industrial Prescription Safety Eye Glass Program for General Motors, fitting the entire plant with prescription safety eye glasses which greatly reduced accidents and increased productivity. When the tank plant closed, Gene had 16 yrs. Of service. He then took up a position with the U.S. Department of Labor, OSHA as a Safety Compliance Officer. A position he held for nearly 20 yrs. Retiring in the mid 80's. Gene was a dreamer,thinker,tinker and do it yourself'er.His favorite pastimes were auctions,collecting,planting trees,faith,reading,politics, listening to Lawrence Welk with his wife of 65 yrs as she sang along. Gene had a love for family and children, raising 5 kids at their home Upon the Ridge. In addition to his wife , he leaves behind to cherish his loving memory are his children, May (Rick) Gordon of Fountain, Co., Eugene III (Edna) of Eaton Twp. ,Janet (Art) Dennis of Carlisle, Twp., Steven (Pamela) of Amherst , and David of Marietta, Ga., 7 grandchildren , 7 great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews. Preceding Gene in death are his parents Eugene I and May Heard , sisters Edith (Chris) Crissinger , Ethel (Blair) Cook and Myrtle Marie (John) Burger. Gene belonged to several organizations, many over 65 yrs. Laporte UMC , Elyria Sr. Fellowship, Buckeye Mariners Merchant Marines of WWII, American Legion # 12 , Grafton VFW , National Sojourners (Masonic Military Officers Order) , Elyria Masonic Lodge #787 , Honorary Mbr. Of Oberlin Masonic Lodge #380 , Marshal Chapter #47 Royal Arch masons, A.S.S.R. Valley of Cleveland, and was a Past Monarch of El Ray Grotto to name a few. Family will receive friends 5-7PM Monday July 6, 2015 at the Laubenthal-Mercado Funeral Home and Cremation Service 38475 Chestnut Ridge Rd. (at St. Rt. 57) Elyria 440-322-4626 with a Masonic service by Lodge #787 at 7PM. Funeral Services will be 11AM Tuesday at the Funeral Home. Rev. Bill Wendell of LaPorte UMC will officiate. Internment will be in Butternut Ridge Cemetery(Amherst Twp.). Online condolences may be expressed at
