Ronald "DJ" Smith

Ronald “DJ” Smith, age 50, of Wellington, passed away on Monday, May 15, 2023 at New Life Mercy Hospice after a short courageous battle with cancer. DJ, also known as “Slap,” was born on July 31, 1972 in Oberlin, OH to parents Ronald and Patricia (nee: Collins). He was a 1991 graduate of Keystone High School and LCJVS, where he received a certificate in electrical. DJ married Helen (nee: Smith) on February 19, 1994. He worked as a concrete crusher for Denes Concrete for over 18 years. As a teen, he worked alongside his father in construction for Spitzers. Those who knew DJ describe him as the life of the party and a marvelous storyteller. He was always there for those who needed him where he would offer his long tight hugs. DJ was a hard worker and loved his job. He was an avid hunter and very skilled at claiming wild game both small and large. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him. Survivors include his wife, parents; sisters, Karri (Chris) Overstreet, Annette (John) Moore; step-daughters, Cheryl (Michael) Collins, Ann Burnheimer; step-son, Dustin White; grandmother, Alfreda Collins; nieces, nephews, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, numerous aunts, uncles, cousins; and his beloved dog, Willow. DJ was preceded in death by his grandparents, James Collins, Dwight Smith, Betty Smith; cousin, James “Jimmy” Collins; granddaughter, Ryelyn White; and nephew, Jonathan Moore. Family will receive friends on Wednesday, May 24, 2023 from 4 PM until the time of service at 7 PM at the Laubenthal Mercado Funeral Home 38475 Chestnut Ridge Rd (at State Rt. 57) in Elyria. Elder Clint Snyder will officiate. Burial will be private. A celebration of life will be announced at a later date. Online condolences may be made at www.laubenthalmercado.com.
