Larry D. Pierce (76) of Elyria passed away on December 28, 2023 after a sudden illness. Larry was born on March 29, 1947 in Oberlin to Lyle and Helen (Blough). Larry grew up in Penfield Township, attending elementary school at Penfield School and then graduating from Keystone High School in 1965. While in school Larry played football, was a member of Future Farmers of America, was at the center of good-hearted mischief and participated in 4H. Larry met his future wife, Dianna (Denes) while attending the fair. He made her his wife in October of 1969.
Larry went on to attend Lorain County Community College where he earned a degree in mechanical engineering. Larry worked in Lorain County, Huron County, Ashland County and in Chicago as an engineer. After returning to Lorain County to care for his parents Larry made the decision to return to school. He once again attended LCCC, this time he studied nursing. Larry found his true calling with his second career. Larry worked with those struggling with mental illness prior to finding his niche which was working with the elderly. Larry would joke that he enjoyed it so much and did so well caring for geriatric individuals because they could relate to one another.
Throughout his years he would help his father, Lyle at the Lorain County Fair. Father and son could be found in the sheep barn working long hours and trying to out talk the other. Larry, along with his wife, Dianna were members of the Pre-Cana team and participated in Marriage Encounter, two organizations dedicated to the sacrament of marriage in the church. Larry enjoyed to sing, he was a member of Proclamation, an ecumenical choir that sang at churches and community events in Lorain and Cuyahoga counties. While a member of the choir they performed with Andy Williams for one of his Christmas concerts. Larry was a joy to spend time with, his sense of humor and great timing for delivering a punch line kept you on your toes. Larry gave the best hugs. Larry was a member of St. Mary Parish, he was newly appointed to Parish Council and was looking forward to making an impact both in the church and the community, he was also an active member of the Knights of Columbus, Elyria.
Larry leaves behind his wife, Dianna of 54 years, his daughter Johanna Vakerics, son, David, son and daughter-in-law, Edward and Kim as well as three grandchildren, Rachel (Joseph) Meyer of Cincinnati, Nathan and Austin and two great granddaughters, Avery and Eloise.
The family will welcome family and friends on Tuesday, January 9, 2024 from 11:30 am until 1:00 pm in the Weigand Room at St. Mary Church 320 Middle Avenue, Elyria and then proceed in to the church at 1:00 pm for the funeral mass. Burial will be at a later date at Penfield Cemetery.
Donations in Larry’s honor may be made to St. Mary Church 320 Middle Avenue, Elyria or to the Knights of Columbus 118 Kipling Street, Elyria.
