William C. "Bill" Powell, 97, of Elyria, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, August 10, 2024. Bill was born in Bradford, Tennessee in 1926 to parents Garrett and Lillie (nee: Yates). He entered the military in 1946 where he proudly served his country just after World War II in the Army Air Corps. He married Betty (nee: Greener) in 1947. Bill worked for many years at Ford Motor Company as a Job Setter. He was an avid bird hunter and was a skilled hunting dog trainer. In his spare time, he enjoyed woodworking and gardening. Survivors include his life partner, Kathy Hammond; son, Dr. William R. (Chris) Powell, Jr.; daughters, Barbara Cox and Bonnie Smith; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents and wife; son, Robert; sister, Jane Burns; brother, Douglas; and grandson, Skylar Smith. Visitation will be held on Friday, August 16, 2024 from 4 p.m. until the time of service at 7 p.m. at the Laubenthal Mercado Funeral Home and Cremation Services 38475 Chestnut Ridge Road (at State Route 57) in Elyria. Full military honors will be conducted by VFW Post 1079 prior to service. A private burial will take place at Brookdale Cemetery in Elyria at a later date.
