William D. "Bill" Sims 80, of Elyria passed away Thursday May 22, 2014 at Ames Family Hospice in Westlake following a short illness. He was born February 1, 1934 in Highland Park, MI. Bill served in the United States Air Force, and was a Supervisory Air Traffic Control Specialist working at The Cleveland ARTCC for a total of thirty six years of government service. He was a member of LaPorte United Methodist Church; he served on various church boards, taught Sunday School there, and ran the church's free meal program for eleven years. Bill also served with the Lorain County Mental Health Board, Youth Services Board, Rehabilitation Board, and was a Guardian at Ad Litem Voices for Children. Bill treasured spending time with his family, and enjoyed gardening, the outdoors, and watching professional sports. Survivors include his wife of thirty years; Karen M. (nee: Elder), three daughters; Ashley P. Sims of Monroeville, NJ, Hillary A. Haddix (Brian) of Cuyahoga Falls Erin V. Sims of Elyria, a son; Fraser A. Sims of Olmsted Falls, and three grandchildren; Lila, Fiona, and Alec. Bill was preceded in death by his parents; William H. and Violet (nee: Smith) Sims. NO VISITATION Memorial Services 7:00 PM Sunday May 25, 2014 at LaPorte United Methodist Church 2071 Grafton Rd. Elyria, OH 44035 where Rev. Jonathan McCleery will officiate.
