Walter L. "Smoke" Yourkvitch, 82, of Sanford, FL. And formerly of Elyria passed away Sunday September 14, 2014 at his home following a long illness. He was born July 28, 1932 in Elyria and was a lifelong Elyria resident. Smoke served as a Firefighter for the City of Elyria for 21 years, retiring in 1981. He was a 1951 Elyria High School graduate, served in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict, was a member of the Elyria Knights of Columbus Council 774, a member of the former Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Elyria and enjoyed golfing and fishing. Survivors include his daughters, Katie (David) Spinks of Elyria and Laurie (Daniel) Webber of Sanford, FL., With whom he made his home; son, Michael (Gina) Yourkvitch of Fair Oaks, CA; 8 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; sister, Bernice (Larry) Lalonde of South Amherst. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jeanne (nee-Kokai) in 2013, parents, Walter and Mary (nee-Dombrowski), and a sister, Mary Ann Botos. The family will receive friends Thursday 4:00-7:00 p.m. at the Laubenthal-Mercado Funeral Home and Cremation Service 38475 Chestnut Ridge Rd. (at State Rt. 57), Elyria, where members of the Elyria Fire Department will conduct the Fireman's Last Alarm at 7:00 p.m.. Funeral Services will be Friday September 19, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. in the funeral home. The Rev. Mr. Edward Dillon will Officiate. Burial will be private.
