Obituary

On Sunday, August 8, 2021, Vera Ann Hadaway, "Grams", loving and devoted mother of three children, proud grandmother of four, and great-grandmother of two, passed away at the age of 96 peacefully in her own home in Elyria, Ohio. She was preceded in death by her husband, George Hadaway, after 60 years of marriage. Vera is survived by Bill Bursley, her committed partner of the last 14 years. Vera was born on December 14, 1924 to Joseph and Anna Chovancak in Lorain, Ohio. She received her Registered Nursing degree from the MB Johnson School of Nursing of Elyria in 1944, and practiced nursing in Elyria, Lorain, and Cleveland. She continued to use her nursing knowledge and skills until God relieved her of her duties this past weekend. On August 8, 1945, Vera married George Henry Hadaway. They proudly raised and deeply loved their children, Edward, Sandra, and Scott. Vera had an enormous passion for her family, friends, and community. She loved sports, especially tennis and golf. She was extremely proud of establishing the Junior Golf Program at Oberlin Golf Club, which has been memorialized in displayed photographs at the club. Vera loved golfing with her husband, her children, and friends and she continued to play tennis in her 80's. Vera and her family were founding members of Koinonia Lake Park Associates where they enjoyed summer outings. She was known for her cooking and baking skills... Vera's cookies were enjoyed by everyone who visited with her. Vera loved her church, its people, and its message. She will be remembered for her loving smile and generous spirit. Vera was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Anna Chovancak, her brother, Lt. Edward Val Chovancak, and her husband George Hadaway. She is survived by her son, Edward (Mary Jane) Hadaway, daughter, Sandra (Wanda Dewease) Hadaway, son, Scott ( Catherine) Hadaway, her grandchildren Matt ( Louise) Hadaway, Megan November, Zachary Hadaway, Mikaela (Christian) Hall, and great-grandchildren, Hadley November, and George November. She is also survived by her committed partner, Bill Bursley. The funeral will be held on Saturday, August 14, 2021 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 360 Princeton Ave., Elyria, Ohio 44035 with visitation at 10:00 AM followed by a service at 11 AM. Masks are required for all, vaccinated or unvaccinated. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Elyria, Ohio 44035. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery (Lorain).Arrangements were entrusted to the Laubenthal-Mercado Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Elyria, 440-322-4626.
