Velma Sakalos, (nee-Sabol), 94, of Elyria passed away Tuesday May 7, 2013 at the New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph in Lorain following a brief illness. She was born July 17, 1918 in Pueblo, CO., and lived in the Elyria area for most of her life. Velma worked as a self-employed hairdresser for many years, and was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Elyria. She loved to crochet and donated many afghans for children to St. Mary's Church. She also enjoyed to go on gambling trips to area casinos. Survivors include her daughter, Cathy (Dan) Keller of Elyria; grandchildren, Jennifer and Joe Walczak and Todd Mihalek; 5 great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Louise Mahalek; special friends, Dave Schmidt and Sandy Purdue, and many others who helped with her care. She was preceded in death by her husband, John in 1992, son, John Steven Jr., step-son, Frank Mihalek, 2 grandchildren, and a brother, Bill Sabol. The family will receive friends Monday May 13, 2013 from 5:00 p.m. until the time of services at 7:00 p.m. at the Laubenthal-Mercado Funeral Home and Cremation Service 38475 Chestnut Ridge Rd. (at State Rt. 57), Elyria. The Rev. Mr. Edward Dillon, Deacon at St. Mary Church will Officiate. Burial will be at St. Mary Cemetery, Grafton.
