Obituary

Thomas A. Szabo, 70, of Grafton passed away Saturday July 8, 2023 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was surrounded by family as well as hospice care. Tom was self-employed as a manufacture's representative with Tsquare engineering for 25 years. Most recently he was employed by Laptop Battery Express as a sales representative. He was also golf coach at Lorain County Community College for 16 years. A 1970 Elyria High School graduate, Tom played football and baseball, where as a senior he pitched the only perfect game in Elyria High School history. He graduated from The Ohio State University where he played football for Woody Hayes as well as baseball where he contributed to his team that played for the Big 10 Championship. Tom was inducted into the Elyria Sports Hall of Fame in 1993. Survivors include his wife of 27 years, Nancy Martz-Szabo (nee-Green); daughter, Danielle Szabo of Columbus; sons, Justin (Samantha) Martz of Mt. Pleasant, SC., Ryan (Jessica) Martz of Bluffton, SC. And Sean Szabo of Grafton; sister, Dr. Catherine (Jim) Hackney of Naples, FL.; 7 grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Ashley Szabo and his parents, Alexander and Goldie Szabo. Private family services will be held at Ridgehill Memorial Park, Amherst Township. A memorial golf outing will be held at The Valley of the Eagles, Elyria on Saturday August 5th with contributions going to the Cleveland Clinic Hospice.
