Thomas M Smith, 70, of Amherst, OH passed away on January 1, 2025 at Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio. Born on October 15, 1954, in Elyria, Ohio, he was the beloved son of the last Rose Marie (McCloskey) and Richard Smith.
A proud graduate of Midview High School in 1973, Thomas excelled as an All-American athlete in both football and basketball. His dedication to public service and his community was evident throughout his life. He served as Mayor of Grafton from 1980 to 1986 and continued his commitment to local government as a member of the Grafton City Council from 1987 to 2011. Professionally, Thomas worked for ODOT before joining the Lorain County Sheriff's Office, where he worked for the past 12 years.
Thomas is survived by his loving wife, Cyndy Stiwald; Cyndy's children (Kelly (David), Jason (Jenna) and Adam(Windy)) and grandchildren (Layla, Kennedy, Jackson and Charlie); his brother Richard (Freda) Smith; his sisters Stephanie Smith, Kathleen (Kevin) Swartz, Mary Margaret (Arthur) Atherton, and Michelle (Donnie) Radar, many nieces, nephews, great-nieces,great-nephews, many loving cousins and lifelong friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers Timothy Smith and Kevin Smith.
Thomas and Cyndy (CiCi) shared a love for travel and attending concerts together, creating many cherished memories over the years. His unwavering kindness and dedication to family, community and personal passions left a lasting impact on all who knew him.
Visitation will be held Saturday, January 11, 2025 at Laubenthal-Mercado Funeral Home in Elyria, Ohiofrom 10:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M.; followed by a memorial service. A Memorial Mass and Burial will be held at Our Lady Queen of Peace in Grafton, Ohio on May 10, 2025.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made in Thomas's memory to the Cleveland Clinic Liver Transplant Program atgive@ccf.orgor Pay-to-Play Sports at Midview High School. May Thomas's memory bring comfort to all who knew him.
