2:00 - 6:00 pm (Eastern time)
Thomas “Bill” Leslie Shumaker, 90, of Elyria, Ohio, passed away peacefully on March 28, 2026, at Cleveland Clinic Avon Hospital. Bill was born on July 27, 1935, in Fayetteville, West Virginia. He later made his home in Elyria, where he built a life centered on family, hard work, and quiet dedication. He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force during the Korean War, a time of service that reflected his lifelong sense of responsibility and commitment. He is survived by his beloved wife, Loretta Sue Shumaker (Smith); his brother, Duane “Gus” Shumaker; and their three sons: Thomas Lee Shumaker (Donna), Ryan Shumaker (Tina), and Shawn L Shumaker (fiancé Kelly Isenhart). He was a proud grandfather to ten grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. A hardworking and respected businessman, Bill owned and operated Standard Welding in Lorain and Perkins Motor Service in Elyria since the late 1960s. Known as the man who could fix anything, he became the trusted “go-to” when others couldn’t solve a problem. His skill, determination, and reputation earned him the respect of all who knew him. Outside of work, Bill appreciated the simple things in life. He enjoyed spending time at home with his wife, fishing on Pelee Island, and hunting in Virginia. Many evenings, he could be found relaxing in his driveway with a Heineken in hand, reading the newspaper, and enjoying the company of his many dogs. A celebration of Bill’s life will be held on Saturday, April 25, from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at D.F.I. Machine, located at 6577 Lake Avenue, Elyria, Ohio. This will be a casual gathering—please join us to share stories around a fire, enjoy a meal, and raise a Heineken in his memory. Bill will be remembered for his strong work ethic, sense of humor, personality, and deep love for his family. His legacy will live on in all who knew and loved him. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the Laubenthal-Mercado Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Elyria. Online condolences may be expressed at www.laubenthalmercado.com
