Shirley Ruth Underwood (nee Carter) 81 of Elyria passed away Friday September 2, 2016 at Mercy New Life Hospice in Lorain following a short illness. She was born April 1, 1935 in East St. Louis, Illinois. Shirley was a member of Chestnut Ridge Baptist Church. She had worked for the Telephone Co. in Elyria , and later worked for McDonalds as a cashier. Shirley enjoyed making doll clothes , attending craft shows , being a homemaker and was a wonderful seamstress. Survivors include her husband of 59 years Robert Sr. , daughters Sherry Underwood , Darlene (Mark) Vanhorn both of Elyria , son Robert Jr. of Elyria , grandsons Alexander Robert , Dylan Emmett , great-granddaughter Lira , brother Jimmy of Gulfport, Mississippi. She was preceded in death by her parents James Alfred and Ruth Jane (nee Lane) , brothers Donald and Gene , sisters Helen and Doris. Family will receive friends from 10 AM until time of Service at 11AM Wednesday September 7, 2016 at the Laubenthal-Mercado Funeral Home and Cremation Service 38475 Chestnut Ridge Rd.
