Sandra A. (Sandy) (Cornell) Smith passed away at New Life Hospice on Sunday, October 31, 2021 due to complications from pneumonia. She was born on June 12, 1940 in Elyria where she spent her life. Sandy graduated from Elyria Catholic High School and was a proud member of the class of 1958. She was an active participant in the reunion committee and was always proud to say that she graduated from ECHS. Loyalty that never dies. Sandy was a homemaker raising four children and helping to raise five of the grandchildren until they were of school age. She had them all completing word search puzzles before they ever stepped foot into a school building. Sandy loved to golf at Carlisle Golf Course with husband Wally and other family members. She was a card and game "shark" and never turned down an opportunity play. Sandy loved to read and was very animated when sharing the stories with others. She looked forward to vacationing with Travel World International on several cruises and trips with friends and family members. She was a member of the Women of the Moose and spent many years working at and attending many functions and fundraisers, achieving College of Regent's status. She also belonged to the Eagles, Amvets, and the Polish Club. One of her favorite activities for many years was working at the voting polls during the various elections. Our mother had a special knack for changing the subject on you if you were talking about something that she didn't want to hear about. She was a lifelong, member of St. Jude's Church and was active until recent years. Her loving grandchildren called her "Gramma Sandy" or "San". Her legacy will continue through the lives and hearts of those who hold her dear. She is survived by her loving family, brothers Randy Cornell (Crystal River, FL), Bruce Cornell (Littleton, CO), and sisters Linda Cornell Valdes (Elyria, OH), Janice Cornell (San Francisco, CA), and Debra Cornell (Elyria, OH). Her devoted children, daughters Kimberly (Dennis) Wilhelm, Heidi (Kevin) Zeman, sons Robert (Vicki) Smith and Michael (Suzanne) Smith; grandchildren Christen, Danielle, Brittany, Samantha, Robbie, Jonathan, Coleman and Dylan; great-grandchildren Gavin, Zachary, Harley, Jaxson, Taylor, Lily, Leo, sister-in-law Mary Lou Ashyk, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her devoted husband of 59 years and the love of her life, Robert (Wally) Smith in 2018, and parents Marcella (Verhoff) Cornell and Richard T. Cornell. Arrangements are being handled by the Laubenthal-Mercado Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Elyria, 440-322-4626. A private family burial will take place at a later date at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery.
