IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Ruth M.
Long
February 9, 1932 – October 9, 2021
Ruth Marilyn Long, (Cover) 89, passed peacefully into God's Kingdom, at her home on October 9, 2021. She was born February 9, 1932 in Newton Falls, Ohio at home on the family farm. When she was nine, her family moved to West Farmington, Ohio due to the fact the 350-acre farm was taken over by the government for the Ravenna Arsenal. Ruth graduated from West Farmington High School in 1950 and attended Youngstown Business College. Ruth loved to be outside. Horses were always near and dear to her heart. She learned to ride on draft horses at a young age on the family farm. She owned countless horses throughout her life and loved getting up early mornings to ride. She rode even in her later years. When Vic married Ruth, he promised her that as long as they were married, she'd always own a horse, and she did. Most recently she had a pony named Babe, a donkey named Trixie and a horse BJ, who adored her. Ruth loved flowers and plants and grew beautiful flower gardens. Ruth was an excellent seamstress who would make outfits for herself, her daughters, and other crafts. She hemmed countless pants in her life! She was quite a baker and made great pies and cookies. She enjoyed the yearly tradition of baking Christmas cookies with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her family was always her priority and she loved gatherings and helping her family with whatever was needed. At the age of 13 at a barn fire in West Farmington, she met the love of her life, Vic. They married on April 1, 1955, at West Farmington United Methodist Church. They left the farm for California until Vic was discharged from the US Navy. Upon returning home, they lived in Southington, OH. It was there they started a family. After a turn of events, they ended up on a small farm in LaGrange, OH where they resided for 58 years. Besides having many animals, she helped raise 4-H lambs for the youth to take to county fairs. Ruth had a strong Christian faith and love of God that she instilled in her family. She was a member of LaGrange United Methodist Church where she volunteered her time, served on various committees, and belonged to different clubs within the church. Ruth always saw the best in people and didn't speak ill words about anyone. After raising her family, Ruth worked at various jobs including Hobby Horse Farm, Green Circle Growers, and fifteen years for the Unemployment Office. Among her many life adventures, Ruth climbed Mt. Washington with her family, rode mules down the Grand Canyon, and made several trips to Nashville with good friends, Red and Shirley Ovenden, and later with her family. She is survived by three daughters, Pam (Bill) Hyer, Vicki (Wes) Holcomb, Patti (Joe) Grieve and sister in laws Hazel Coverand Marilyn Mast. She also leaves behind her legacy; 7 grandchildren: Amy, Erica, Stephanie, Jennifer, Ryan, Katie and Patrick and 11 Great-grandchildren, who loved their "GiGi." She is preceded in death by her sweetheart to whom she was married for 65 years, Vic, who passed away Sept. 2020. We're sure he was waiting at Heaven's Gates for his "Shug." She is also proceeded in death by her parents, Fred and Grace Cover, brothers, Fred Cover, Herb Cover, and Baby Carl. Private services for the family will be held Friday, Oct. 15 at 11:00 at LaGrange United Methodist Church. However, friends are invited to listen to the service on their car radio in the parking lot of the church. A celebration of life for both Ruth and Vic will tentatively be held in the spring. The family hopes you will attend to celebrate the life of these two incredible people who have touched so many lives. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to LaGrange United Methodist Church, 105 W. Main Street, LaGrange, OH 44050. Arrangements were entrusted to the Laubenthal-Mercado Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Elyria, 440-322-4626. Online condolences may be expressed to the family at www.laubenthalmercado.com
