Russell Kennedy Doan 99 passed away December 10, 2015 at O'Neil Health Care in North Ridgeville. Russ was born in Woodsfield, Ohio September 19, 1916 to parents Charles and Helen (Kennedy) Doan. Russ attended Ravenna High School , graduated Paris High , and entered Kent State University in 1935. At Kent he captained both the Wrestling and Baseball teams. From 1936-39 he had only 1 Wrestling loss , was Interstate Wrestling Champion at 128 lbs. , and is recognized as one of KSU's all time greatest Wrestlers. In the 1938 Baseball season he was the leading hitter in Ohio Colleges with a .450 average. He received both a Bachelor and Master's Degree from Kent. After graduation he married Eileen Likens of Ravenna and moved to Wadsworth, Ohio as a teacher and coach. His 1942 High School team won the High School State Championship and the all Ohio AAU Championship that included College Wrestlers. From 1943-46 Russ served as a U.S. Navy Lieutenant in charge of th V-5 Wrestling program for pre-flight cadets. He assisted in producing the first hard-cover naval Wrestling manual .After WWII he and Eileen went back to Wadsworth and in 1955 moved to Elyria as the High School Athletic Director until retiring in 1979. In 1959 Russ started Wrestling as a Varsity at Elyria High School, that start grew into a state Championship for Elyria High in 1973. Russ's years as Athletic Director are considered as a Golden Age of Elyria High School Athletics. Russ has been elected to 13 different Halls of Fame including Kent State University where he also received KSU's award of Merit, Elyria , Lorain County Wrestling , Wadsworth , Medina and Portage County Sports Halls. In 1978 he was named State of Ohio Athletic Director of the year. In retirement Russ was selected Elyria Elk of the year and Ohio Elk of the year. He was very active in Elk Lodge #465 in the charity effort against Cerebral Palsy. Russell was an avid golfer with four holes-ion-one. He enjoyed Hunting , Fishing , the Indians , Browns , all Elyria High School teams and time together with family at Sandy Lake. Survivors include Susan (Donald) Dobina of Louisville , Kentuckty , son Terry (Laurie-West) Doan of Elyria. 6 grandchildren , 7 great-grandchildren, sister Dama Seyfried. He was preceded in death by Eileen at age 94 and 73 years of marriage , parents Charles and Helen , sisters Dorotha Leas , Doris Tontimonia , brothers Charles and Robert.
