Richard R. Weitzel Sr., 86, of Elyria passed away Monday March 12, 2018 at his home following a brief illness. He was born April 28, 1931 in Cleveland and was a lifelong Elyria area resident. Dick was the owner of the former Weitzel's Greenhouse and Garden Center in Elyria for many years. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church where he served as an usher, served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict, was a 65 year member of the Elyria Knights of Columbus Council 774 and a member of the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus. Dick also served as an advisor of the Buckaroos 4-H Club for 20 years and served as president of the Senior Horse Council for 13 years. Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Judith (nee-Cullin); daughters, Toni (Steve) Barnhart, Regina Weitzel, Michelle (Hans) VanWormer, Sharron (Gregg) Dill and Amy (Tyler) Hunt; son Richard Jr. (Julie); grandchildren, Matthew VanWormer, Audra Waters, Hannah Barkhurst, Grace Dill and John Hunt; 3 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by 4 sisters and 5 brothers. The family will receive friends 4:00-7:00 p.m. Thursday in the Wiegand Room at St. Mary Church 320 Middle Ave., Elyria. Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday March 16, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. in St. Mary Church. The Rev. Fr. Charles Diedrick, pastor, will be the Celebrant. Burial will be at St. Mary Cemetery, Elyria. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to St. Mary Church.
