Richard John "Gibby" Gibbons

Richard John "Gibby" Gibbons, a lifelong resident of Elyria, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a lifetime of memories, stories, and people who loved him dearly. Born in Elyria to Ralph Gibbons and Ethel Rita (Meecha) Gibbons, Richard was proud of his hometown and the community he served throughout his life. Richard shared 71 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Barbara (Swisher) Gibbons, building a life centered around family, friendship, and countless memories. Barbara preceded him in death, and he is now reunited with the woman who shared so many years of his life.

Richard devoted an incredible 46 years of service to the City of Elyria, retiring as the Director of Parks and Recreation. His career was more than a job—it was a reflection of his love for Elyria and the people who lived there. He took great pride in the parks, the community, and the many relationships he developed throughout his years of service.

Richard was a member of the United Polish Club and a proud Irishman who loved bringing people together. He was especially proud of Gibby's Place, a place where everyone knew your name. Friday nights at Gibby's Place were a special tradition, with everyone gathering for the best perch dinner in town. For him, it was never just about the food it was about the people, the conversations, the laughter, and the memories made together. Gibby's Place was a reflection of Gibby himself: warm, welcoming, and always a place where there was room for one more.

He enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing, and treasured trips to the cabin in Coolville with his buddies. He also enjoyed gambling and never seemed to run out of a good story to tell. Gibby had a wonderful ability to turn an ordinary moment into a memory that would be talked about for years.

One of his favorite stories was about the bears that lived in Cascade Park during his years with the Elyria Parks and Recreation Department. He especially loved Gracie, who held a very special place in his heart. During the flood of 1969, Gibby helped save Gracie, a story he loved to share and one that became part of the many colorful memories of his life and career.

Above all, Richard treasured his family. He took great pride in his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and loved watching his family grow through the years. He loved being part of their lives and celebrating their accomplishments, big and small.

Richard is survived by his daughter, Judith Petrus of Elyria; daughter Linda Mceachern of Grafton; son, Gary Gibbons (Terri) of North Ridgeville; and Brad Takacs of Georgia; along with many cherished grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Barbara Gibbons; his daughter, Sharron Bunch; his son, Michael Gibbons;, grandchildren; Tracy Petrus Kenneally and Brent Petrus, and his son-in-law, Craig Petrus. Gibby will be remembered for his devotion to his family, his love of Elyria, his Irish pride, his sense of humor, his storytelling, and his gift for bringing people together. He leaves behind not only a lifetime of accomplishments, but also generations of family and friends who carry his stories and memories of Gibby will live on for generations to come. Later, Gibby! You will be missed more than words can say! A Celebration of Gibby’s life will be held from 1-5 PM on +Sunday September 13, 2026 at The Knights of Columbus Hall 118 Kipling St. Elyria, Ohio. The family suggests that memorial contributions in Gibby’s memory be sent to the charity of the donor’s choice.
