Obituary

Ralph D. Richards 93, of Elyria passed away at home surrounded by his loving family on Saturday June 24, 2017 following a long illness under the care of Crossroads Hospice. He was born April 14, 1924 in Elyria. Ralph served in the U.S. Navy Seebees with their "Can Do" motto philosophy during WWII. Ralph applied that same philosophy to his work as the founder of Richards Earthmoving, and in 1947 was the first contractor to own a backhoe in Lorain County. He was truly an expert at his trade, to whom many consulted on their projects. Ralph often took on jobs that others felt could not be accomplished. He mentored many people over the years. He also earned a private pilot's license, and flew well into his 80's, he was a member of the U.F.O. (United Flying Octogenarians). Ralph's generous spirit touched numerous lives, and his spirit of adventure will to continue to soar through the clouds. Ralph was also a member of St. Vincent DePaul Catholic Church. Survivors include his loving wife of sixty four years; Virgie O. "Dole" (nee: Eubanks) whom he married in 1953. Additional survivors include two daughters; Deb S. Balmert (Terry) of LaGrange, Denise E. Daniels (Larry) of Elyria, two sons; Dave L. and Dan A. both of Elyria. Eight grandchildren; Diane, Amanda, Derek, Dennis, Jodi, Brandon, Danielle, Aaron, and four great grandchildren; Paxton, Lilah, Rhemi, Weston. Ralph was preceded in death by his parents; David and Elizabeth (nee: Pauly) Richards, a sister; Alma Veres and a brother; Aaron. The family will receive friends from 4-7 PM Tuesday June 27, 2017 at The Laubenthal-Mercado Funeral Home and Cremation Services 38475 Chestnut Ridge Rd. (at State Rt. 57) Elyria (440)322-4626 where closing prayers will be at 9:30 AM Wednesday. Mass of Christian Burial 10:00 AM Wednesday June 28, 2017 at St. Vincent DePaul Catholic Church 41295 North Ridge Rd. Elyria, OH 44035. Reverend Father Donald H. Dunson, Pastor will be the Celebrant. Burial will be at St. Mary Cemetery in Elyria where V.F.W. Post# 1079 will provide full military honors. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions in Ralph's memory be sent to St. Vincent DePaul Catholic Church.
