Phillip Gordon Slack, 80, of Eaton Township, passed away peacefully Thursday October 28, 2021 at his home. Phil was born September 21, 1941 in Lorain, OH. To Lyle and Beulah (Searles) Slack. He joined the United States Army in 1963 and then received his GED from the Lorain Institute after 1986. Phil Joined Eaton Township Fire Department in 1969 and was promoted to Fire Chief in 1996. He served Eaton Township as their Fire Chief until his retirement in 2011. During his time as Fire Chief he was a member of the Lorain County Fire Chief's Association. He was responsible for training new firefighters throughout Lorain County. He was then introduced to his soul mate, Kathy. He married Kathy Slack (nee-Mowry) at Marblehead Lighthouse in Ohio and were able to enjoy the last 30 years with one another. As well, Phil also worked at the Ridge Tool Company and retired from there after 42 years. Phil enjoyed hunting and trapping, spending time with his dog Jack and cats Zozo and Elmo, going to tractor pulls and fairs and farming at the Kenny Ternes Farm. Above all, he cherished spending time with his family. Phil will be deeply missed by his wife Kathy; children, Mark (Stacy) Slack, Cindy (Glen) Thompson, Tracey (Joel) Petersen, Marly (Kurt) Heger, and Julie Kachurchak; grandchildren, Marisa and Sara Slack, Scott and Matt Thompson, Carly and Alicia Petersen, Lyndi (Tyler Orsick) Slack, Katelinn (Timothy)Shull, John (Kalie), Robert (Micheala), Steve (Riley) and Ben Nowagarski, Carter Heger and Lily Kachurchak; great-grandchildren, Hunter, Christian, Parker, Daisey, Tanner, and Jerry. Brother, Earl (Sandy) Slack. He was preceded in death by his son, Brian Slack, his parents and brothers, Richard and Roy Slack. The family will receive friends on Wednesday November 3, 2021 from 4:00-7:00 p.m. at the Laubenthal-Mercado Funeral Home and Cremation Services 38475 Chestnut Ridge Rd. (at State Rt. 57), Elyria. Private services and burial will be held. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Lorain County Fire Chief's Association.
