Dr. Pacifico Canda Mercado M.D. age 85 of Cape Coral, FL. (formerly of Elyria) passed away Sunday May 29, 2011 at Hope Hospice in Cape Coral surrounded by his loving family. He was born August 25, 1925 in the Philippines. Dr. Mercado was a medical school graduate of The University of Santo Tomas in the Philippines. He was licensed to practice medicine in Ohio, Illinois, Indiana and Florida. Dr. Mercado practiced family medicine in Elyria from 1965 until his retirement in 1995. He was a member of St. Katherine Drexel Catholic Church in Cape Coral where he was an usher and greeter. He was a member of St. Jude Catholic Church while residing in Elyria. Dr. Mercado was also a member of The American Medical Association, Ohio Medical Association, and had served as a Diplomate with The American Academy of Family Physicians. He enjoyed spending time with his family, building and flying model aircraft with his sons. Dr. Mercado was an accomplished gardener growing bountiful fruit, vegetable, and ornamental gardens at his homes in both Ohio and Florida. His relaxation included oil painting and watching boxing; he continued to jog past his eightieth birthday. He was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, and physician who often made great personal sacrifices for his family. Dr. Mercado always reminded his family to never forget God in their lives. Survivors include his wife of fifty four years; Virginia Ann (nee: Hiller), four sons; Philip C. (Angela M.) of Elyria, Patrick C. (Kimberly D.) of Cape Coral, FL, Peter C. (Traci L.) of Cleveland., Paul C. (Victoria L.) of Elyria. Two daughters; Philicia C. Janios (John) of Long Island, NY, Pia C. Mercado of Tempe, AZ. Additional survivors include eight grandchildren; Nicholas Dominic Cimino (Heather), Andrea Nichole Cimino, Niketas Pacifico Janios, Tyler Canda Mercado, Merissa Marie Mercado, Philip Angelo Mercado, Paul Coen Mercado, Paige Celeste Ewry, and two great grandchildren; Dominic and Drecon Cimino, three sisters; Marciana Leone, Puring Quero, and Carolina Mercado. He was preceded in death by a daughter; Pacifica C. "Pixie" Cimino ( Philip A.), his parents; Castor and Victoriana Mercado, two brothers; Brigido and Jose Mercado, three sisters; Mereng Manubay, Pising Lindo, Rizal Linda Mercado. Memorial Mass 11:00 AM Saturday August 27, 2011 at St. Jude Catholic Church 590 Poplar St. Elyria, OH 44035 where the family will receive friends one hour prior to Mass. Rev. Fr. Frank P. Kosem, Pastor will be the Celebrant. Entombment was private at Coral Ridge Cemetery in Cape Coral, FL.
