Obituary for Steve E. "Fearless" Kaminski

Our Heavenly Father took Steve by the hand and led him home on November 4, 2014, he was 87. Steve was born on September 9, 1927 in Elyria, Ohio and was the son of the late Steve and Pauline (Antkowiak) Kaminski. He married the love of his life, Eleanor Malinowski on August 1, 1953. Steve graduated from Elyria High School in 1945 and served in the US Army, stationed in Panama during World War II in the Coast Artillery. He was Honorably Discharged in 1947 and received the Good Conduct, World War Victory and Sharp Shooter Medals. Steve retired from General Industries in 1991 after 46 years and he also was a favorite bartender at the United Polish Club in Elyria retiring after 48 years, at the age of 84 in 2011. Steve was an Honorary Member of the United Polish Club in Elyria, where he held many offices over a 50 year span; he and his Father were the only Father and Son to both hold the office of President in the history of the UPC. He was also a member of the Cleveland Polka Association, United States Polka Association, The Notre Dame Club of Lorain County, Am Vets Post 32, an Honorary Member of the Elyria Manor Hunt Club, and a former member of the PLAV Post 38, PACC, and the UPC all in Lorain. He also served as Chairman of the Elyria Boxing and Wrestling Commission in the 60's and was on the Inaugural Board of Director's for the Elyria Sports Hall of Fame. Steve was a former member of Holy Cross Church in Elyria where he was selected Holy Name Man of the Year twice, and served daily mass for many years. He was currently a member at St. Agnes Church in Elyria, and served as Eucharistic Minister and Lector at both Parishes. Steve was an avid athlete, excelling at many of the sports he played. Steve held numerous records in golf, bowling, softball, and baseball. While in the Army, he was recruited for the Panama Baseball Team and played against the Brooklyn Dodgers. He was offered a job on the Panama Canal and to play on Panama's semi pro baseball team, but he opted to return to Elyria, where he was invited to try out for the Cleveland Indians Farm Team but was eliminated because of poaching rules regarding American Legion players. Steve also boxed in the Army as a welterweight and won 10 of 12 fights with 2 losses by decisions. Steve holds the record for most games played in the Annual Mud Bowl game held on New Year's Day at Hamilton Field playing 65 out of 76 years. Steve was a devoted and passionate Notre Dame fan and he raised his family to be the same. He attended at least one Notre Dame Football game a year for the last 69 years. He also enjoyed the PGA, Cleveland Indians, Cavaliers and Browns. Steve's family was his pride and joy and his children Debbie and Bob DeMaria; Chris and Dave Kish, grandchildren, Dominic, Anthony and Casen DeMaria and Victoria Kish survive him. Surviving siblings include: Joe and Pam Kaminski, Bill Wladecki, Dolly Kaminski, Helen Kimmel, Mary Ann and Jerry Socha, as well as many nieces, nephews, 8 goddaughters, relatives and close friends. In addition to his parents, Steve was welcomed into heaven by his soul mate Eleanor, his in-laws Alex and Mary Malinowski, siblings Jack Kaminski, Dorothy Wladecki, Joe and Irene Krolik, Al Kimmel, Casey and Georgia Malinowsky. Family and friends may pay their respects on Friday, November 14, 2014 from 5-7pm at The Laubenthal-Mercado Funeral Home and Cremation Services 38475 Chestnut Ridge Rd.(at State Rt. 57) Elyria (440)322-4626. Mass of Christian Burial celebrating Steve's life will be held on Saturday November 15, 2014 at St. Agnes Church, 611 Lake Ave., Elyria at 10:30 AM with the Rev. Fr. Norman A. Gajdzinski and Rev. Father Albert Veigas, Pastor will concelebrate. (PLEASE MEET AT CHURCH) Interment will be at St. Mary's Cemetery in Elyria where V.F.W. Post #1079 will provide full military honors. Steve requested no flowers, but felt if any were sent, they reflect his Polish heritage and be red and white or reflect his love for Notre Dame and be blue and gold.
