Nancy Lee Maassen ( Nee Myers), 67 of Elyria passed away Saturday June 3, 2017 at Ames Family Hospice in Westlake from a lengthy battle with Colon Cancer. She was born February 18, 1950 in Shreveport, Louisiana. Nancy graduated from Elyria High School in 1968. After graduation she enlisted in the U.S. Navy where she began her nursing career. Nancy met Dennis while stationed at the U.S. Naval Hospital at Great Lakes, Illinois. They were married July 12, 1969 at the Wesleyan Church in Elyria by Reverand Fletcher. She graduated from St. Mary's Nursing School in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1976. She then went on to graduate from Nurse Practitioner School in Syracuse, New York with a specialty in geriatric nursing. While Dennis was stationed in different states through his commitment to the Navy, Nancy was able to serve geriatric clients in many different settings. Nancy's career in nursing spanned over 30 years. After Nancy retired from the Wesleyan Village, she was able to spend more time with her family. Nancy worked in the missions field with her church. She enjoyed sewing and quilt making. She also loved to read. Another love that she had was cooking and baking. Her greatest passion was spending time with her grandchildren and great grandson. Survivors include her husband Dennis Dean Maassen; daughters Laurie (Rusty) Perrine of Elyria, Sandy Maassen of Elyria, Amber (Jim) Hollingsworth of Lorain, Melissa Long of Diamond; sons David (Rachelle) Maassen, Matthew (Jamie) Maassen, Mark (Lindsey) Maassen all of Elyria; 19 grandchildren; 1 great grandson; sister Pauline ( Chuck) Hood of Elyria; brother Paul Myers of Anaheim, CA. She was preceded in death by her parents Melvin and Anna Jane Rogers (nee Berger); sisters Jane and Janet. Family will receive friends 4-7PM Wednesday June 7, 2017 at the Laubenthal-Mercado Funeral Home and Cremation Service 38475 Chestnut Ridge Rd. (at St. Rt. 57), Elyria. 440-322-4626, where funeral services will be held 11 AM Thursday June 8, 2017. Pastor Bob Wickens from Church of the Open Door will officiate.
