Michael J. Higgins, 70, of Elyria, originally from Sandusky passed way Tuesday December 9, 2014 at University Hospitals Elyria Medical Center following a brief illness. Mr. Higgins was retired from NASA in Cleveland and had served in the United States Navy and participated in the Cuban blockade in 1962. He served as a board member for Eden Valley Enterprises and as a sound technician for the Valley City Frog Jump. Survivors include his wife, Bette Lou (nee-Versaci); son, Sean; granddaughters, Olivia and Zoe; brothers, Dan (Patty), Robert (Jeri), William, James (Paulette), Thomas (Doris); sisters, Virginia Higgins, Geraldine Higgins, Margaret (Bradford) Huntley, and Suzanne (Ted) Winebarger; numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lamont and Betty Higgins, sister, Patricia Higgins, brother, Richard Higgins and first wife, Kay. The family will receive friends Friday December 12, 2014 from 11:30 a.m. until the time of services at 1:00 p.m. at the Laubenthal-Mercado Funeral Home and Cremation Services 38475 Chestnut Ridge Rd.
