Melvin H. Ternes, 85, of Eaton Township passed away Tuesday December 4, 2018 at UH Elyria Medical Center following a brief illness. He was born August 9, 1933 in Elyria and was a lifelong Eaton Township resident. Melvin worked at NASA from 1974 until 1994 and was also a lifelong farmer. He was a longtime member of North Eaton Christian Church (Disciples), served on the Eaton Township Fire Department of which he served 12 years as Fire Chief and served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. Survivors include his wife of 36 years, Marie (nee-Bickford); daughters, Edith Carroll, Marilyn (Tim, deceased) Berg, Patricia (Daniel) Barone, Tracey (Joel) Petersen and Cindy (Glendon) Thompson; sons, Brian Slack and Mark (Stacy) Slack; 10 grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild; brother, Peter Ternes. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Jack, Bob and Bill Ternes. Services will be 12:30 p.m. Saturday December 8, 2018 at the North Eaton Christian Church (Disciples) 35895 Royalton Rd., Grafton, where the family will receive friends from 11:30 a.m. until the time of services. The Rev. David Chafin, pastor, will Officiate. Burial will be at Butternut Ridge Cemetery, Eaton Township. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to the church. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Laubenthal-Mercado Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Elyria 38475 Chestnut Ridge Rd., Elyria.
