Magdalene "Maggie" Elek, (nee-Kadas), 87, of Elyria passed away Sunday December 10, 2017 at O'Neill Healthcare in North Ridgeville. She was born October 22, 1930 in Elyria and was a lifelong Elyria resident. Maggie was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Elyria, where she was a greeter, member of the choir, and past president of the Alter and Rosary Society and also parish council. She was employed at the former Hess & Hess Pharmacy in Elyria, a life member and past president of the ladies auxiliary of V.F.W. Post 1079, member of the American Legion Post 12, Elyria united Polish Club, book clubs, Nyx Club and Leisurely Ladies Club. She enjoyed decorating cakes for her family, playing golf, bridge and mahjong and was a avid Cleveland Brown's fan, and extremely proud of her Hungarian heritage. Survivors include her daughters, Christina (Larry) Mollenkanp and Ann Marie (Danny) Stone; sons, Gary (Patty), Joseph (Brenda), and Gregory (Sharon) Elek; son-in-law, Glen Krugman; 15 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; sister, Patricia (Kirk) Nevins; brother, Dr. John Vaprezsan. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph in 2007, daughters, Mary Jo Elek in 1975 and Vicki Krugman in 2016, great-grandson, Grant Carter in 2000 and Betty Szabo in 2009. The family will receive friends Wednesday 4:00-7:00 p.m. at the Laubenthal-Mercado Funeral Home and Cremation Specialists 38475 Chestnut Ridge Rd. (at State Rt. 57), Elyria. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday December 14, 2017 at St. Mary Church 320 Middle Ave., Elyria. (please meet at church). The Rev. Fr. Charles Diedrick will be the Celebrant. Burial will be at St. Mary Cemetery, Elyria. Memorial contributions can be made to the church or to the Elyria Public Library 320 Washington Ave., Elyria.
