Leonard A. Bescan, 87, of Grafton passed away Monday at the New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph in Lorain following a brief illness. He was born September 13, 1924 in Lorain and was a Grafton resident for most of his life. Leonard was employed by the United States Postal Service and was the first letter carrier in the Village of Grafton, delivering mail for 25 years, and retiring in 1984. He was a 1942 Lorain High School graduate, a member of Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Grafton, was a past leader of the Grafton Cub Scouts, Served in the United States Navy in both W.W. II and Korea, serving in the South Pacific aboard the USS Piedmont and aboard the USS Ajax during the Korean Conflict. Leonard was also a member of the North South Skirmish Association, and was a 34 year member of the Grafton Village Fire Department. He was a life member of the Grafton Post V.F.W. 3341 where he was a past commander and a officer for many years. He was also a founding member of the Soldiers of History Unit at the V.F.W. Post 3341. Survivors include his sons, Alan (Denise) Bescan and David Bescan, both of Grafton; grandchildren, Evan and Hannah Bescan. He was preceded in death by his wife Melba (nee-Schwed) in 1994 and a sister, Mary Louise Zeise. The family will receive friends Thursday 4:00-7:00 p.m. at the Laubenthal-Mercado Funeral Home 38475 Chestnut Ridge Rd. (at State Rt. 57), Elyria. 440-322-4626. Closing prayers will be Friday at 9:30 a.m. in the funeral home followed by a 10:00 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church Chapel 708 Erie St. Grafton. The Rev. John P. Seabold, pastor, will be the Celebrant. Burial will be at Butternut Ridge Cemetery, Eaton Twp., where members of V.F.W. Post 3341 will conduct full military honors.
