March 12, 1925 – September 4, 2020
On the morning of September 4, 2020, John Polgar, loving husband and father of one, passed away at age 95. He was reunited with his wife and favorite dance partner, Marian, who died four days earlier. Despite his diagnosis of COVID 19, he truly died from a broken heart. John was born on March 12, 1925 in Elyria, Ohio to Hungarian Immigrants Paul and Elizabeth (Fekete) Polgar. He graduated from Elyria High School in 1943, and joined the Navy shortly thereafter. He trained as a Machinist Mate, and in the midst of picking up soldiers from Omaha Beach on June 7th, 1945, his landing craft hit a mine. After spending a month recuperating from shrapnel in his leg, he returned to active duty until the end of the war. On August21, 1948, he married Marian Jean Allen, whom he met at the Paradise Club in Elyria. She was the light of his life. They raised one daughter, Carol. John was an avid outdoorsman. Golf was his passion, along with hunting, fishing, skiing, dancing, photography and travel. He was highly involved with Post 1079 of the VFW in Elyria, serving as post Commander, member of the rifle squad, and Chaplain. He accompanied Veterans to the WWII Museum in Washington,D.C. on Honor Flights, and in 2006 flew to France to commemorate the 70th Anniversary of D-Day on the shores of Omaha and Sword Beach. He was awarded the Purple Heart in 1999 through the auspices of Sherrod Brown, and received the French Medal of Honor shortly thereafter. He was known for his humor, infectious smile and upstanding character. John was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Elizabeth, wife Marian, brother Paul, and several nieces and nephews. He is survived by his daughter Carol, grandchildren Chip, Nicole, and Paul, great-grandchildren Dylan, Jack, Jacob, and Chloe, and assorted nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, October 10, 2020 at 11 AM at St. Mary's Catholic Church 320 Middle Ave. Elyria, Ohio.(per CDC guidelines social distancing will be observed). MASKS ARE REQUIRED. Rev. Fr. Charles Diedrick will be the Celebrant. In lieu of flowers, Donations can be made to DAV ( Disabled American Veterans) at DAV.org. A Military service and internment of John and Marian's ashes will be held at the Western Reserve Veterans Cemetery in Seville, on Monday, October 12, 2020 at 9:30 AM- limited to 30 family and friends.
