Obituary

Jean Barnett (nee Walraven), 88 of Elyria passed away Wednesday December 17,2014 at her residence. She was born September 26, 1926 in Cleveland, Ohio. She worked as an Accountant for Ohio Crankshaft. Jean enjoyed and Participated in all sports, and began her career at age 14 running for the Polish Olympic Club of Cleveland. Her best year was 1946 when she was tied for 2nd at the AAU in the High Jump and at the AAU indoors that year placing 2nd in the High Jump and 3rd in High Hurdles. In 1947 Jean set the World indoor record in the 50 yard hurdles held at the Cleveland Armory clocking 7.2 seconds. Jean also represented the U.S.A. in the 1948 London Summer Olympics in track and field participating in the 80 meters , 400 meter relay and the Long Jump where she placed fourth . In 1976 Jean was inducted into the Cleveland Sports Hall of Fame. Survivors include sister-in-law and lifelong friend Helen Walraven of N. Ridgeville , nieces Susan Traut , Karen Graham , 1 great-niece , 6 great-nephews , 1 great-great niece and 1 great-great nephew. She was preceded in death by her husband Pat, parents Ernest L. Sr. and Helen M. (nee Vejchar) , 1 sister and 1 brother. All Services and Burial Private.
