James J. Filiaggi 82, of Elyria passed away Thursday December 14, 2023 at The Welcome Nursing Home in Oberlin following a long illness. He was born May 5, 1941 in Chester, PA.  Jim relocated to Ohio in 1955, where he attended Elyria High School. He was a proud veteran of The U.S. Navy serving from 1958 to 1962, and was involved in The Blockade of Cuba where he was a radioman on the USS Walworth County and was awarded The Expeditionary Medal. Jim retired from General Motors following thirty six years of service at the Elyria and Parma plants. He was a lifetime member of the Avon VFW Post #7035, and a member of Avon Lake American Legion. Jim was a member of St. Jude Church for many years where he served as a Eucharistic Minister, Usher and helped with the parish festivals.  Survivors include his son; Tony Filiaggi (Hope), daughter; Amy Scordino both of Elyria, and an estranged daughter; Kathleen.  Additional survivors include eight grandchildren, two brothers; Peter Filiaggi (Shirley) of Strongsville, Thomas Filiaggi (Jackie) of Phoenix, AZ., and many nieces, nephews and cousins.  Jim was preceded in death by his loving wife of fifty six years; Mary, a son; James, his parents; Peter Filiaggi and Ida Talbot (Howard) (nee: Kendra) , and a sister; Delores Whitaker. Funeral services will be 1:00 PM Thursday December 21, 2023 at The Laubenthal Mercado Funeral Home 38475 Chestnut Ridge Rd. Elyria (440)322-4626 where the family will receive friends from 11:00 AM until time of services at 1:00 PM. Deacon Patrick Humphrey will officiate.  Burial will be at St. Mary Cemetery in Elyria where North Ridgeville VFW Post #9871 will provide full military honors. Jim's family would like to extend a special gratitude and thanks to all who loved and cared for him, especially the staff of Welcome Nursing Home and Amedisys Hospice.
