Herbert J. Dechant, 89, of Pittsfield Township passed away Wednesday October 13, 2021 at the Cleveland Clinic Main Campus following a brief illness. He was born March 1, 1932 in Sheffield and was a Pittsfield Township resident for most of his life. Herb was a lifelong farmer and served in the United States Army. He was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Wellington, a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, and a member of the Wellington Eagles and also the Lorain County Farm Bureau. A licensed pilot, he was also an avid outdoorsman and also owned race horses. Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Thelma (nee-Lakocy); daughters, Judy (Tom) Keys, Cathleen Bahrami, Becky (John) Notley and Rita Dodd; sons, Dan (Ginger) Dechant and David (Julie) Dechant; 14 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; sister, Rosemarie Dechant. He was preceded in death by a son, James Paul Dechant, sisters, Ruth Wensink and Sr. Mary Jane Marie Dechant and a brother, Ken Dechant. The family will receive friends Monday 3:00-7:00 p.m. at the Laubenthal-Mercado Funeral Home and Cremation Services 38475 Chestnut Ridge Rd. (at State Rt. 57), Elyria, where members of the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus will stand honor guard. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday October 19, 2021 at St. Patrick's Church, 512 North Main St., Wellington. The Rev. Fr. Charles Diedrick will be the Celebrant. (Please Meet at Church). Burial will be at Pittsfield Cemetery, where members of the V.F.W. Post 1079 will provide full military honors.
