Harvey Chester Hatfield, Jr. (92), of Elyria, passed away after a short illness on June 10, 2024,and his beloved wife of 63-years, Mary Ellen (85), of Elyria, joined him on December 31, 2024, following a 25-year battle with Parkinsons.
Harvey was born on May 7, 1932, in Almyra, Arkansas to Harvey Chester and Mary Jane Hatfield. He was a 1950 graduate of Stuttgart High School in Stuttgart, Arkansas, and was drafted and served in the US Army from 1953-1955 during the Korean War. He worked for Standard Oil Company for 13 years and purchased his first gas/service station in August 1961 at the age of 29. It was in October of that same year that he married Mary Ellen, and they started their life together. Mary Ellen was born on August 27, 1939 in Elyria, Ohio to Edwin Sensback and Martha Stephens, and was a 1957 graduate of Elyria Catholic High School.
For 27 years, Harvey and Mary Ellen owned and operated Harvey's SOHIO on Abbe Road in Elyria. During these years, Harvey also held 3 offices within the Northern Ohio Dealers Association (Treasurer, Vice President, and President for 4 years.) and was a member the Elyria Lions Club.
Harvey and Mary Ellen were long time parishioners of St. Jude Church, Elyria, where their children also attended elementary school. It was here that Mary Ellen began the St. Jude School Uniform Thrift Shop, providing a ready supply of uniforms for new incoming students at affordable prices; a program that is still thriving today. Harvey and Mary Ellen were also active parents at Elyria Catholic High School, working Bingo for 8 years. At the high school, Mary Ellen began the monthly food sale drive through Brown Derby, later to be known as Market Day, generating additional funding for the high school. She was also President Elect of the Elyria Memorial Hospital Auxiliary in the late 80s and created the Bi-Monthly Auxiliary Hospital Newsletter. While Mary Ellen kept herself busy with these activities, Harvey started what would be a long career of coaching girls' softball. Starting in 1984, he coached at Elyria Catholic High School for 10 years, Florida Community College, Ocala, Florida for 2 years and the Lorain County Diamonds for several years.
After his retirement in 1992, Harvey and Mary Ellen became snowbirds vacationing six months out of the year in Naples, Florida. For the next 30 years, Harvey worked part-time at Cherry Ridge Golf Course in Elyria, and Fox Fire Country Club in Naples for 10 years. In Naples, Mary Ellen reorganized a 16-member women's golf league called The Birdies of Paradise and the league is still active. Both Harvey and Mary Ellen enjoyed traveling, playing golf and spending time with family and friends. Harvey also enjoyed duck hunting and fishing, while Mary Ellen enjoyed luncheons with her high school classmates and friends, shuffleboard, tennis, bingo and was a lover of all games (Rummikub, Sequence, Pokino, slot machines, etc.).
Harvey and Mary Ellen were the loving parents to 4 children, Alan (deceased), Lisa Dosch (Greg), David (Shannon) and Anne Tyler (Bryan). They were also the proud grandparents of Grant Dosch (Kristine), Drew Dosch (Carly), Rachel Barber (Cody), David Hatfield (Chloe), Paige Keener (Heather), Morgan, and Cooper, as well as the great grandparents to Jacob, Griffin, Isabella, Quinn, Layne and Jasper. They were both preceded in death by their first child, Alan and their parents. Harvey was also preceded in death by his brothers, Hubert, Claude, and Raymond and is survived by brothers Marshall and Larry (Debbie), and sisters Martha Hosto, Ann Puleo (Dave) and Bertie Flatt. Mary Ellen is survived by her only sibling, Barbara Bungard of Oberlin/Elyria.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, May 10, 2025, from 12:30pm to 2:00pm at the Laubenthal Mercado Funeral Home and Cremation Services 38475 Chestnut Ridge Road (at State Route 57) in Elyria 440-322-4626. Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 2:30pm at St. Jude Catholic Church 590 Poplar Street, Elyria, Ohio 44035 (please meet at church.) Reverend Father Frank P. Kosem, Pastor will be the Celebrant.
