Harry C. Ponting Jr., 68, of Elyria passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday November 6, 2018 at his home. He was born September 25, 1950 in Elyria and grew up in Avon and spent his adult life in Elyria. Harry was a teacher for the Elyria Public Schools for 38 years, retiring in 2012. He also worked part-time a Bob-O-Link Golf Course in Avon, was an avid Cleveland Indians Baseball fan and enjoyed fishing. Harry was a 1969 Avon High School graduate, where he was a member of Athletic Hall of Fame. He was also a 1973 graduate of Kent State University, where he earned his degree in education. Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Karen (nee-Weber); daughter, Erin Ponting (Chase Ross); sons, Michael (Kim) Ponting, Matthew (Carla) Ponting and Ryan Ponting; 8 grandchildren; sisters, Dolleva Bennett and Linda Orr; brother, Gary Ponting. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry C. Sr. and Dolleva Ponting. The family will receive friends 12:00-2:00 p.m. Saturday November 17, 2018 at the Laubenthal-Mercado Funeral Home and Cremation Service 38475 Chestnut Ridge Rd. (at State Rt. 57), Elyria. A reception will follow from 3:00-5:00 p.m. at Bob-O-Link Golf Course 4141 Center Rd., Avon.
