Harris F. Opfer, 69, of LaGrange passed away unexpectedly at his home on Sunday October 2, 2011. He was born February 2, 1942 in Elyria and was a lifelong area resident. Harry retired in 2005 from the Elyria City School System where he had worked as a custodian. Prior to that he worked as a X-Ray Technician at EMH Healthcare, and also at the former Abex Corp. and former Elyria Foundry. He was a 1960 LaGrange High School graduate, an active member of the LaGrange Engine Club, was a member of the LaGrange Historical Society and the Lorain County Genealogical Society and also was a member of the North-South Skirmish Association. He was also a past scoutmaster in LaGrange and Elyria. Survivors include his wife of 28 years, Barbara (nee-Wallhead); daughter, Christine (Allen) Hall of Grafton; son, Charles Opfer of Lima; step-daughter, Tracey Britton of Elyria; step-son, Brett Britton of LaGrange; foster daughter, Donna Jenkins of Elyria; grandchildren, Kara Vasquez, Daniel McGann, and Zaynab Bari; great-grandchildren, Brody Hall and Chanel Vasquez; sister, Marilyn (Steve) Jencso of Medina and several nieces and nephews. Their will be no visitation. A memorial service will held on Saturday October 15, 2011 at 12:00 noon at the Washington Ave. Christian Church, 301 Washington Ave., Elyria. The Rev. Janet A. Long, pastor will Officiate. Private burial will be at LaGrange Cemetery, LaGrange. Memorial contributions may be made to the Washington Avenue Christian Church or to the LaGrange Engine Club c/o John Baker 6651 Charles Rd. North Olmsted, OH. 44070.
