Harold A. Smith, 81, of Elyria, passed away peacefully Wednesday, June 10, 2026. He was born in Berea, Ohio on January 1, 1945 to parents Delbert and Bessie (nee: Dodd). Harold retired from Invacare after working as a tool and die maker and technical engineer for over 35 years. Harold was a man of faith, service, and craftsmanship who found joy in both his community and the work of his hands. A dedicated member of LaPorte United Methodist Church, Harold was actively involved in numerous church committees, many mission trips, and generously shared his time, talents, and leadership in support of his church family. He had a lifelong passion for woodworking and took great pride in creating projects that reflected his skill, patience, and attention to detail. In his younger years, Harold was an avid bicyclist who enjoyed the freedom and adventure of the open road. He will be remembered for his strong work ethic, servant’s heart, and the lasting impact he made on the lives of those who knew and loved him.
Survivors include his beloved wife of over 50 years, Terri (nee: Morton); son, Todd (Jessica) Smith; daughter, Terez (Bill) Dodd; grandchildren, Autumn, Sawyer, Londyn, Karl and Andrew; sisters-in-laws Carol (Bill) Cencula, and Jan (Joe) Shapko, and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Phyllis Bailey and Maxine Smith.
Family will receive friends on Saturday, June 20, 2026 at LaPorte United Methodist Church 2071 Grafton Road from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service at 12 Noon with a luncheon at the church afterwards. Pastor William Baker will officiate. A private burial will take place at a later date.
