IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Gerard "Hap"
Bunce
January 7, 1955 – January 30, 2025
Gerard "Hap" Bunce passed away on Thursday, January 30th after a long illness.
Gerard was born on January 7, 1955, in Berea, Ohio to Robert and Mary Bunce (nee Horishna) and right away he made a name for himself. Soon after he was born, his mother nicknamed him "Happy". The youngest of four boys, he was the happiest of all her babies. With him being the baby brother, and always staying true to the name, it stuck with him throughout his entire life. From there on out he was only known as Hap. With his positive light, bright smile, and witty personality no one was better suited to carry the name.
Hap was raised in Avon, OH and graduated as a proud Eagle in 1973. Shortly after graduating he started a 50+ year career in the construction industry, specializing in concrete. He started out as a cement truck driver and worked his way up to becoming Plant Manager of Grafton Ready Mix where he spent several years before starting his own business. He owned and operated Northwest Resources for more than 10 years. In 2003 he started his long career as a Superintendent for Star Builder's, Inc. in Amherst, OH. After over twenty years he retired from Star only to continue his education in the field by becoming an ACI certified inspector. He then worked for a couple of years as the Testing Manager for Rafter-A LTD. Hap was one of the hardest working guys you will ever meet. He made an impression in the business and was an absolute master of his trade.
One morning, in 1976, Hap went to get his daily Lawson's coffee and as fate had it, he met his future wife, Mary. After their first date they were never apart. As a husband, Hap was the rock and partner that Mary could always rely on. Together they loved spending time on or near the water. Whether it be on the Lake Erie Shores or traveling to their favorite places like Maine or upstate New York, water was a must. They shared a beautiful life filled with love and cherished memories.
As a father and grandfather, Hap was his children and grandchildren's greatest supporter. Always ready with a word of advice, a loving hug, or a laugh to lighten the moment. His love for his family knew no bounds and was one of the greatest joys of his life. His wisdom, affection, and playful spirit created lasting bonds that will continue to inspire them for years to come.
In addition to his family, Hap had many passions that brought him joy. He was an avid boater and fisherman spending countless hours in rivers and on lakes reelin'em in. He also enjoyed spending time with his brothers, classic rock, cooking, reading, and watching Cleveland sports.
Hap is survived by his wife Mary Bunce (nee Clifford), children Anthony (Kristin), Ryan, Kelly (Scott) Taylor, John (Shelby) his grandchildren Hannah Taylor and Jack Bunce, brothers Robert (Josephine), Christopher (Linda), Richard (Pamela), and several other close family members. He is preceded in death by his parents Robert and Mary and brother-in-law John "Gary" Clifford. Hap could always see the bright side and he brought that light to those around him. He was truly one of a kind. His love and presence will be missed but will remain in the hearts of all who loved him.
