Gerald L. Turner, 89, of Elyria, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, February 24th. Gerald was born September 23rd, 1935 in Risco, Missouri. Their family relocated to Ypsilanti, Michigan in the mid-1940's. After proudly serving his country in the US Navy, he met the love of his life, Shirley, and had a beautiful life for 67 years. Gerald became an air traffic controller and relocated to Elyria in 1964. He worked at the new Oberlin FAA facility, eventually becoming a supervisor until his retirement in 1990. Gerald's passion was sailing, but he also enjoyed gardening, genealogy and watching sports. Survivors include his two sons, Scott of Ashburn, Virginia, Grant (Cathy) of Vermilion; grandchildren, Sara (Josh) Stacy, Zachary (Lori) Turner, Lauren (Paul Kimmey) Turner, Erica (Sean) White; great-granddaughter, Eleanor. Gerald was preceded in death by his parents, Louie and Daisy Turner of Ypsilanti, Michigan; his wife, Shirley, a brother, Howard Turner and sister, June DeVee. The family would like to express their extreme gratitude to their parents caregivers, especially Minerva, who loved and cared for them for the last 12 years. Visitation will be held on Saturday, March 1, 2025 from 10 a.m. until the time of service at 12 noon at the Laubenthal Mercado Funeral Home and Cremation Services 38475 Chestnut Ridge Road (at State Route 57) in Elyria. Burial will follow at Brookdale Cemetery in Elyria where full military honors will be presented. Online condolences may be expressed to the family at www.laubenthalmercado.com.
