Florence Edythe Pais (nee Moore), of North Ridgeville, Ohio, passed away early Thursday, January 22, after a brief illness, at age 98, at EMH University Hospital. Florence was born April 10, 1916, in Cleveland, Ohio, to Elizabeth Alice Moore (nee Everard) and Cecil Alexander Moore. The influenza epidemic of 1918 took her father and left her mother unable to care for the children. Florence joined brother Cecil in New London, Ohio, to be raised by loving foster parents Mattie and Floyd Runkle. Florence graduated with honors from New London High School in 1934 and went on to receive her diploma from the MB Johnson School of Nursing, Elyria, Class of 1940, as a registered nurse. She served briefly as Superintendent of New London Hospital and left to wed the love of her life, John Pais, who she met while in nurse's training. They were married on November 30, 1946, in Cincinnati, Ohio, and in 1951 built their lifelong home on Case Road in North Ridgeville. Florence was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Elyria. She was a founder of the North Ridgeville Women's Club and was generous with her time and to numerous causes. She enjoyed big band music and dancing, reading and traveling to such varied places as Cuba, California, Florida, Canada, England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. She was preceded in death by brothers Cecil and Robert Moore, half-brother John Katt, and sisters Lillian (Wilken) of Ontario, Canada, and Beatrice (Brown) of Ashtabula. She is survived by daughter Joan Andrea Gardiner (William), of Indianapolis, IN, son John Edward Pais (Teresa), Huron, OH, grandchildren David Gardiner, Karen Lawrence(David), Hannah Barman (Jordan), and John Richard Pais and two great grandchildren Brooke and Kate Lawrence as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held at the Laubenthal Mercado Funeral Home, 38475 Chestnut Ridge Rd., Elyria, Ohio 44035, Monday January 26,2015 from 11:00am - 12:00pm. A memorial service will follow. Interment will be at Brookdale Cemetery in Elyria, Ohio.
