Obituary

Eva "Jan" Setliff (nee: Bowling), 79, of LaGrange passed away peacefully just after midnight on Friday, August 25, surrounded by the family she worked tirelessly to build and protect. Jan was born November 8, 1937 in Raleigh County, West Virginia. She was the ultimate caregiver who spent her life ensuring her loved ones never went without-especially when it came to food. When she wasn't asking people if they were hungry, she could most likely be found in her garden, watching her hummingbirds (which were also well-fed), or tapping her foot on the floor while listening to bluegrass music. Her voice was much better than she gave herself credit for, and it was a treat to hear her sing along when she thought no one was listening. Jan is survived by her husband of 60 years, Paul; daughters Darlene and Pam; sons Nelson, Paul, Brad (Susan) and Darrell. Additional survivors include siblings Mary Carson (Duke), Martha Seabolt, and John Bowling (Kathy); grandchildren Tony, Jason, Kimberly, Bradlee, Rajeana and Jesse; six great-grandchildren, and more family and friends than could fit on a thousand pages. She was preceded in death by her grandson, Michael Setliff; her parents, Alva and Eva (nee: Hatcher) Bowling; a brother, Acel (Kathy); sisters Janet, Mabel, Cosby and Evelyn; and by her beloved in-laws, Walter and Susan Setliff. Jan was a hurricane of a woman who gave without thinking, who never took a moment for herself, and who loved with a ferocity that will impact the people in her world for generations. She will be missed immensely. The family will receive visitors from 4-7 p.m. on Monday, August 28, 2017at The Laubenthal-Mercado Funeral Home and Cremation Services at 38475 Chestnut Ridge Rd. (at State Rt. 57) in Elyria (440)322-4626. Funeral services will be held immediately following visitation at 7:00 PM Monday, and burial will be held privately. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, to please honor Jan's memory by donating blood. This was a something she did regularly for as long as she could-just another example of her loving and selfless nature. Online condolences can be expressed at www.laubenthalmercado.com.
