Obituary

Eugene J. Smith, 80, of Elyria, passed away Monday January 21, 2013 at his home following a sudden illness. He was born May 12, 1932 in Avon and was a Grafton resident for most of his life. Eugene worked at the Ford Motor Co. in Lorain for 37 years, retiring from the repair department. He served in the United States Army in the First Tank Battalion of the 1st Armored Division, was a member of Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Grafton (former Immaculate Conception Church), where he was a member of the Holy Name Society, was a lector, a Eucharistic Minister, former CCD teacher, Mass Server, member of the building committee and active with the Helping Hands food pantry. Eugene built his family's residence and enjoyed gardening and cars. Survivors include his wife, Donna L. (nee-Miller); daughter, Julianne Stumphauzer of Vermilion; sons, Daniel of Lakewood, Bernard of Akron, Christopher of North Ridgeville, Vernon of Silver Springs, MD., and Leonard of Hilliard, OH.; 10 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; sisters, Carol Smith of Avon and Ellen Webber of Elyria. He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Helen Smith, brothers, James F. Smith in 2010 and twins, Ralph and Raymond in infancy. The family will receive friends Friday from 9:00-until the time of a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church 708 Erie St., Grafton. The Rev. John P. Seabold, pastor, will be the Celebrant. Burial will be at St. Mary Cemetery, Avon. In liue of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Our Lady Queen of Peace Building Fund or the Helping Hands ministry of the church. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Laubenthal-Mercado Funeral Home and Cremation Service 38475 Chestnut Ridge Rd., Elyria.
