Eugene A. (Gene) Tonry, 86, died January 14, 2015 in Elyria Ohio. He is survived by a son, Kim of Downers Grove, Illinois, daughters, Kathy L. Eubanks of Worthington, Roberta A. (Beth) Pavlik of Avon Lake, four grandchildren, sisters Lola Kendall, Dee Latimer, Roberta (Bobbi) Bryner, Audrey Miller and Carol T. Lakocy all of Elyria, and special friend Phyllis Gales of Elyria. He was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Sally (Mayak), his parents, Joseph B. Tonry Sr. and Lola Mae (Henson) Tonry and his brother Joseph. Mr. Tonry was a lifelong resident of Elyria. He graduated from Elyria High School in 1945, Baldwin-Wallace College in 1951 where he was a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity and Cleveland Marshall Law School, now Cleveland State University in 1957, where he belonged to Delta Theta Phi Legal Fraternity. Mr. Tonry served in the U.S. Navy, 1945-1946 and 1951-1953. Most of his service was on the USS Telfair. He practiced law from 1957 until 2011, lastly in the firm of John Morrison. He served 20 years on the Elyria Board of Health as well as on the Boards of United Way of Lorain County and Elyria YMCA where he also led a cardiac exercise class for about 10 years. He also served 19 as Secretary Treasurer of the Lorain County Law Library Association. He was a member of American Legion Post 12, a life member of Elyria Lodge #787F&AM and a Past Master of King Solomon Lodge #56 F&AM, Scottish Rite Valley of Cleveland, Senior Men's Fellowship, Public Employees Retirees Inc. (PERI), United State Golf Association, an honorary member of the Ohio State Bar Association, the Lorain County Bar Association, the USS Telfair Reunion Association, and the Lorain County Historical Society. He was a former member of Elyria Toastmasters #2820, Elyria Cotillion and United British Society. He enjoyed travel, playing golf and trivia. Mr. Tonry was a 50 year member of First Congregational Church UCC and had served, at various times on the Board of Trustees, Board of Deacons and Benevolence Board. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 17, 2015 at 11am followed by a luncheon at First Congregational Church UCC, 330 Second St., Elyria, OH. The Reverend Patrick Nicolino will conduct the service. Arrangements have been entrusted to Laubenthal-Mercado Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to any charity of the donor's choice.
