Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our matriarch, Eleanor Magdalene Mittler (nee Regler) 93, of Elyria, who passed away peacefully after a lengthy illness, on Monday, February 17th at UH Medical Center in Elyria. She was born October 30, 1931 in Massillon. Eleanor attended Mount St. Marie High School in Massillon and graduated from Elyria High School in 1949 where she played basketball. Eleanor was a 75 year member of St. Agnes Church in Elyria and was married at Sacred Heart Church in Elyria to her husband Geza in 1950. She was active at her church and was a member of the Altar and Rosary Society and taught PSR. Her Catholic faith was unwavering, her love for God was undeniable and her daily prayer life was extremely important to her. She shared her strong faith through words and actions to everyone she met. Eleanor attended Sunday Mass, she was devoted to her heavenly mother Mary, prayed the rosary daily, and attended the weekly Miraculous Medal Novena with her family. She was employed by General Motors, RW Beckett Corporation, and retired at the age of 80 from the Lorain County Office on Aging where she was the editor of the Senior Years Newspaper for 25 years. She was also the founder and president of the Erie Shores Humane Society, and there with other animal enthusiasts, rescued and rehomed thousands of animals over the past 42 years. Eleanor was presented the Top 10 Award from the City of Elyria for her entrepreneurship. Eleanor was also extremely active in so many areas in her life including volunteering at St. Agnes School where her children attended, co-founder of the weekly Rosary Group with her best friend Celia Krueck, was a mentor to young moms at Birthright of Lorain County, a Cub Scout den mother, a Democratic committee chair, a member of TOPS, helped out at the APL in Elyria, and was a member of the American Red Cross Animal Disaster Team. She was a force to be reckoned and made it through many obstacles in her life with grace and courage. Eleanor created incredible memories that her family will cherish forever.

She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, always putting God and her family first. She loved to laugh and always had a smile on her face, a kind word to give, an optimistic phrase or quote to share and her beautiful blue eyes were always shining brightly. She loved to socialize and have deep discussions and had many friends whom she loved dearly. Eleanor enjoyed keeping her life and mind busy. Her title of "Scrabble Queen" was well known, she loved the holidays, especially Christmas and she was an avid reader, enjoyed word searches, collecting bells, and loved to sing and listen to music, especially classic country. She also enjoyed old movies, the Hallmark Channel, crocheting and spending time with her family and friends. Her passion was cooking and baking and was always in the kitchen with her Hungarian recipes, all of which she handed down to her family.

Survivors include her children; Deborah Archer of Elyria Township, Douglas (Theresa) Mittler of Elyria, Karen (Terry) Howell of Carlisle Township, grandchildren; Rebecca (Ben) Pope, Jennifer Whitten, Jessica Archer, Olivia (Frankie) Losiewicz, Hannah (Sam) DeJoy, Nicolas (Anna) Summers, Cassandra (Austin) Remo. Great grandchildren; Drew, Emma, Jack and Cooper Whitten, Max and Lily Archer, and Gwendolyn Losiewicz, daughter-in-law, Mona Mittler.
