Edwin "Gene" Henderson, 84, of Avon and formerly a longtime resident of Elyria, died unexpectedly November 19, 2023, at Cleveland Clinic Avon Hospital. He was born on February 15, 1939 to Eva and Arthur Henderson in Sims, Illinois. He retired from The Ridge Tool Company in Elyria. Edwin was a 1957 Graduate of Elyria Catholic High School and a lifelong member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Elyria. He was a longtime coach for Elyria Little League South where he was recently honored as a "Trailblazer" for his dedication for many years to their baseball program. In addition he coached Elyria Catholic Baseball and spent many years coaching CYO football and basketball teams at St. Mary School in Elyria. He was an avid Cleveland Sports fan and loved attending the school and sporting events of his grandchildren. Edwin is survived by his wife of 64 years, Patricia (nee Walter), his daughter, Laureen (Zax) Dow; Son, Matthew (Melissa) Henderson; daughter in law, Molly (Duane) Streator; his sisters, Judy Stevens and Louise Kruder; grandchildren, Alex Dow, Adam Dow, Hillary Henderson Frankmann, Mitchell Henderson, Ryan Streator, Katie Bowman, Victoria Hicks, Angela Wuebbenhorst, Cassie Bryan, Josh Romero, Taz Henderson and 16 great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his children, Mary Bias and Ed Henderson Jr., son in law, John Bias, and siblings, Jerry Henderson and Jim Henderson. Visitation will be on Saturday, November 25, 2023 from 4 PM – 7 PM at Laubenthal-Mercado Funeral Home 38475 Chestnut Ridge Road (at State Route 57) in Elyria. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 AM on Thursday, November 30, 2023 at Saint Mary Catholic Church 320 Middle Ave Elyria, OH 44035 (please meet at church). Rev. Father Charles T. Diedrick, Pastor  will be the Celebrant. A private burial will be held at Saint Mary Cemetery in Elyria at a later date.
