Dorothy J. Salyer, 87, passed away on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday November 24, 2016 at the Porter Pavilion of Avon Oaks Nursing Home due to complications related to her three year battle with Alzheimer's disease. Born on September 22, 1929, in Ashland, Kentucky, Dorothy grew up between Boyd and Johnson counties near Paintsville, Kentucky and the lived the majority of her life in Lorain, Ohio. The Valedictorian of her High School class, Spelling Bee Champion, a veracious appetite for reading, cheerleader and licensed beautician highlighted her young adult years and it was evident that she could have succeeded in any chosen career path. Yet Dorothy always declared that what she wanted most in life was to be a wife, mother and homemaker and to take care of her husband and children in a faith-based household. Objective achieved. Mission accomplished. Described by friends and family as a true "prayer warrior" who fervently and tirelessly prayed for the well-being, healing, happiness and souls of others, Dorothy was known throughout her life for deep and abiding devotion to her Christian faith as well as her active support, counsel and ministries within her church community. Dorothy attended and served at the Pentecostal Foursquare churches in Amherst, Lorain and Elyria pastured by Rev. Eugene Kurtz, Rev. David Pyles, and Rev. Ron Balas, respectively. Over the past three years, she found great comfort under the ministry of Pastor Scott Skeens at the Sheffield Church of God in Sheffield Ohio. Second only to her faith, Dorothy devoted her life and purpose to her beloved husband, Joel Leroy Salyer, to whom she was married to for 64 years and preceded her in death in April, 2015 as well as their two sons Ronald (wife Camille) Salyer and Kevin (wife Tina) Salyer, who reside in Seguin, Texas and LaGrange, Ohio, respectively. Dorothy also took great pride and joy in her three grandchildren including Cole Salyer of Seguin, Texas , Ryan (wife Betsy) Salyer of Newark, Ohio, her favorite granddaughter, Rachel (husband Corey) Dean of Wellington, Ohio as well as her recently born great-grandson, Brady Joel Salyer, son of Ryan and Betsy. She is also survived by her three dearly-loved sisters, Mabel (Fyffe) LeMaster , Mertie Belle (Fyffe) Hamilton and Mary (Fyffe) Trimble, all of Paintsville, Kentucky and sisters-in-law , Betty Jo (Salyer) Wolf of Amherst, Ohiio, Joan (Dorton) Fyffe of Lexington, KY. As well as numerous cherished nieces, nephews and cousins located in Kentucky, Ohio and throughout the country. In addition to her husband, Dorothy was preceded to heaven by her father, Link Fyffe and her mother, Stella (Wright) as well as brothers Link Fyffe Jr. and Billy Joe (Joan) Fyffe. She was also preceded in death by her in- laws, Harry B. Salyer and Hester Mae (Sturgill) Salyer, brothers-in-law Eugene Salyer and his wife Ilene (Ferguson), Eugel Salyer and his wife Ruth (Fitzpatrick), Harry Russell Salyer and his wife Garnett (McKenzie), James (Mary) Trimble, Jack (Mertie Belle) Hamilton, John (Mabel) LeMaster, Herbert (Betty Jo) Wolf and dear nephews Mark (Brenda) Trimble and Kenny Russell (Sue) Salyer In her spare time, Dorothy was a die-hard fan of the Cleveland Indians, the Cleveland Cavaliers, University of Kentucky basketball and all sports activities involving her sons and grandchildren. She also enjoyed Christian and gospel music including Gaither Homecomings and Andrae Crouch concerts as well as the television ministries and writings of Joyce Meyer, Jack Hayford and Joel Osteen. Dorothy was a voracious reader and collector of cookbooks and she enjoyed preparing wonderful meals and desserts for her family and friends. Throughout her life, Dorothy enjoyed Christian friendship and fellowship with precious life-long and memorable friends such as Della Simons, LaDonna Moebius, Della Knight, Viola and Marcus Strong, Linda and Ken Wells, Nolan and Connie Smith, Ron and Barbara Balas, Ed, Andra, Frank, and Frances Juristy, Dick and Martha Hecock, Janice and Lester Martin and Scott and Donna Skeens.
