Obituary

Denice M. Whaling (nee: Cartmill), 75, of North Ridgeville, passed away peacefully due to Alzheimer's Disease on Saturday, July 26, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on February 7, 1950, in Detroit, Michigan, and was the cherished daughter of Jack and Marilyn Cartmill (née Mitchell). From an early age, she exhibited a nurturing spirit and a deep passion for learning, qualities that would define her life's work and her legacy.

Denice dedicated herself to educating young minds at Prospect Elementary School, where she served as a beloved teacher for 35 years. It was there, in the halls of the school, that she met the love of her life, Thomas Whaling. The two were married in 1973 and built a beautiful life together, sharing over 50 years of marriage filled with love and laughter. Tom preceded her in death in 2023, and Denice held him in her heart always.

Denice earned degrees in Mathematics and Elementary Education from Graceland College and the University of Michigan, and continued her education for her Master's degree and beyond at Kent State University. She was deeply admired for her wisdom, kindness, and endless patience. Her classroom was a place of warmth and wonder, where students were encouraged to dream, grow, and believe in themselves.

Denice enjoyed life to its fullest. She created welcoming beauty in her home and throughout her gardens. She baked the most delicious treats and captured countless memories in her family photos. She loved to travel, whether it was a short road trip getaway or an adventure across the globe. She listened to the music of her youth, supported local theater, and spent time with her beloved pets.

Denice's life was centered around her family. From hosting Christmas dinners to summer pool parties, she looked forward to any opportunity that brought everyone together. She created childhood wonder and lovingly supported her children's goals. Above all, she adored her grandchildren and delighted in spoiling them with treasures and stories. She will be remembered for her nurturing spirit, her infectious smile, her gentle strength, and the way she made everyone feel seen and valued.

Survivors include her daughters, Diane (Nicholas) Ostang, Deborah (Nathan) Shubick; son, Michael (Holli) Whaling; brothers, James, William (Bambi), and Richard (Lori) Cartmill; and grandchildren, Samantha and Rebecca Ostang, Evan and Asa Whaling. She is preceded in death by her husband, parents, and infant son, Mark.
