Clara "Alta" Smith, 89, of Elyria, passed away peacefully on April 15, 2023 at Life Care Center in Elyria. She was born on June 20, 1933 in Mouth of Wilson, Virginia. Clara lived in Elyria most of her adult life. She worked as a cashier and retired early so she could spend more time with her family and new grandson. Clara was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She will be missed dearly by all of her family. Survivors include children, Monica Garfield, Gary (Rosalie Sue nee: Houston) Smith; grandchildren, Kristie Garfield, Laura (Ryan) Rieth, Mark Smith, Rodney Smith and Tisha Ray; great-grandchildren, Makenzie Meadows, Dalton Ray, Bryce Rieth, Mia Rieth, Kinslee Rieth, and Brayden Rieth. She is preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Aubrey Smith; parents, Brack and Mary (nee: Gill) Hash; brothers, James Brack Hash, Jr. and Rodney Hash; and an infant grandson, Daniel Garfield. Family will receive friends on Wednesday, April 19, 2023 from 11 AM until the time of service at noon at the Laubenthal Mercado Funeral Home, 38475 Chestnut Ridge Road (at St. Rt. 57) Elyria. Pastor Arik Borstad from Community of Faith Church will officiate. Burial will follow at Butternut Ridge Cemetery in Eaton Twp.
