Obituary

Carolyn Crook Long, 85, died at her Elyria, OH, home on August 3, 2018, following an extended illness. She is survived by her daughters, the Rev. Dr. Janet A. Long of Elyria, Rachel Long of Tampa, FL, and Barbara J. Long of Elyria; sons-in-law Col. Daniel D. Clark of Elyria and Robert H. Mattox of Tampa; granddaughter Julia Mattox of Newport Beach, CA; sister Alice Crook Massay of Virginia Beach, VA; and extended family. She was pre-deceased by her husband of 49 years, the Rev. Arthur Eugene Long, and brother James Sidney Crook, Jr. Mrs. Long was born in Wadsworth, OH, in 1932, to the late James Sidney and Velma Gardner Crook. She graduated from Wadsworth High School in 1950 and Hiram College, Hiram, OH, in 1954. On August 14, 1954, she married Rev. Arthur Long, whom she met on the first summer staff at Camp Christian, Magnetic Springs, OH, when she was 17. The couple's lives were marked by loving service in the Ohio communities where Rev. Long ministered: Champion, Crooksville, and Elyria. After earning education credentials at Ohio University, Mrs. Long was a dedicated teacher at Crooksville High School for more than two decades, retiring to Elyria. Active in religious and civic organizations and musical groups throughout her life, she most recently served as an elder, pianist, member of the chancel choir and Whitechapel Ringers, Joanna Circle member, and hospitality chair of Washington Avenue Christian Church, Elyria. She volunteered at Elyria Salvation Army and on the board of the Friends of the Elyria Public Library. Mrs. Long enjoyed baking--and was widely known for her sweet rolls. Other hobbies included cooking and entertaining, traveling, sewing, knitting, solving puzzles, and creating stained glass works of art. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 25, 2018, at 2 p.m., with Rev. Dr. Janet A. Long, Senior Pastor, officiating. Memorial donations in her honor may be sent to Washington Avenue Christian Church, 301 Washington Avenue, Elyria, OH 44035, in support of the church's mission and ministry, in perpetuity.
