IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Carl E.
Douglas
January 10, 1936 – May 19, 2025
Carl Douglas, 89, of Grafton, OH, passed away peacefully on May 19, 2025, with his loving wife by his side. His family finds comfort in the promise of his eternal life.
Carl was born on January 10, 1936, in Akron, OH, to Alfred and Elizabeth Douglas. He was the youngest of eight children—Flora, Alice, Margaret, Donna, William, Jack, and Alfred—who all preceded him in death. Carl graduated from Buchtel High School in Akron and later attended Akron University, where he studied Chemistry and Business. Throughout his life, he was committed to furthering his education, often returning to the classroom to expand his knowledge.
Carl's professional journey began at Westfield Insurance, but it was his lifelong career in sales that defined his working years. He worked at Morton Salt, Detrex Chemicals, Rhone-Poulenc, and ultimately retired from Solvay. His career took him and his family to many cities and states across the country, including Chicago, IL, Annapolis, MD, and Princeton, NJ, before they returned to Akron. Even after retirement, Carl's passion for business remained strong. He assisted Arm and Hammer in launching a new chemical product, keeping his hands in the industry he loved. Eventually, Carl and Mitzie settled in Grafton, OH, to be closer to family.
One of Carl's greatest accomplishments was building a loving family with his wife of 67 years, Mitzie (Walker) Douglas. The couple met in a high school church group, where they formed a deep friendship that blossomed into a lifelong partnership filled with adventures, volunteer work, and the joy of raising their three children—Mark, Kimberly, and Pamela. Despite the demands of his career, Carl was always present on weekends for big family dinners, volunteering with a local unicycle group (The Uniques) with his children, participating in parades, and traveling across the country.
Outside of his family life, Carl had a variety of interests that kept him active and engaged. He enjoyed spending time on the golf course, fishing, woodworking, cooking, and sharing stories with friends and family. Carl loved exploring historical landmarks, attending auctions to find a great antique, and cheering on the Cleveland sports teams. Above all, he treasured the time spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, whether playing, carving pumpkins, or sharing heartfelt conversations. His love of travel also took him around the world, where he created lasting memories.
Carl was deeply committed to his community and church. A member of both the Johnson United Methodist Church (Barberton) and more recently, LaGrange Global Methodist Church, he found joy in giving back through service. He volunteered for the Barberton Area Community Ministries (BACM) food bank and took on various leadership roles within the church. One of his most cherished volunteer activities was working with the PGA tournaments at Firestone Country Club, where he was honored with the prestigious Dave Franklin Award for his long-standing dedication and contributions to the event's success.
Carl is survived by his beloved wife, Mitzie; his children, Mark, Kimberly (Chuck), and Pamela (Joe); his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, all of whom he loved dearly.
Carl will be remembered as a true servant of the Lord, dedicated to living his faith through action. He was a devoted follower of Christ, always striving to help others and spread kindness. His life was a testament to the principles of love, service, and humility, and he will be remembered as a faithful fisher of men, guiding others with his example and unwavering belief.
Details for the funeral are yet to be finalized.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the BACM food pantry in Carl's memory. Donations can be made online at https://bacm.givecloud.co/fundraising/forms/7XEWNRD8 , or by cash, check, or credit card sent to 939 Norton Ave, Barberton, OH 44203.
